Stoner by John Williams
I’ve been contemplating reading Stoner for some time, but seeing this new hardback edition from vintage-classics I was completely and utterly swayed, I’m currently on page 40 and so far it’s made deeply satisfying reading, one of my favourite lines has been in Stoner’s observation of his mother –
His mother regarded her life patiently, as if it were a long moment that she had to endure.
One of those lines that seem to illuminate off the page, like many here. The prose leans towards the poetical and I can only hope that at some point in the near future the publishers will reissue his poetry collections, in particular The Broken Landscape, in an edition as lavish as the one above.
